Ruby (Supernatural)

In the beginning, not much is really known about Ruby, a feisty blonde who was introduced in "The Magnificent Seven". We are introduced to Ruby as a blond girl who follows/watches Sam Winchester. She seemingly focuses on Sam throughout the episode, coming close to approaching him once, but when he turns around, she disappears. In the final moments of the episode as Sam is being overtaken by demons, Ruby miraculously appears out of nowhere, brandishing a mystical knife that is able to kill demons. One of the women possessed by the demons apparently notices her and begins to fight her, but is quickly dispatched by Ruby and her knife. Ruby then proceeds to slaughter all the other demons hurting Sam to his awe. Before she leaves, she tells him that "I'm the girl that saved your ass," and then disappears out of the house into the night. Left in complete shock, Sam is left wondering about Ruby.

Ruby then appears in the next episode, "The Kids Are Alright", with a seemingly less than significant role. Ruby still remains cryptic with her motives and does not reveal too much, except that she wants to help Sam. She informs Sam that there is work to be done, referring to the changelings present in the episode. She does not return until the end of the episode and this is when she reveals what she really is, a demon. Sam threatens to kill her, but she says that she is on his side, and that not all demons just walk around the world senselessly killing people. She promises that she can help Sam with Dean's contract, possibly hinting that Dean may not die after all. Next, she appears in "Sin City". She manifests herself to appear before Bobby, who is unsuccessfully rebuilding The Colt, since all of its bullets have been used up. As Bobby looks on at Ruby with fear, she urges him to shoot her, which he does. The Colt obviously does not work as Ruby stands there, still very much alive and peeved. When Bobby asks what she wants she replies "world peace, a new shirt". It is presumed that Bobby does in fact accept Ruby's offer because near the end of the episode Ruby and Bobby return to help the Winchesters with the new and improved Colt. Dean is knocked away by one of the demons who has come to retrieve Casey, another demon, but Sam gets the gun in the end. When Sam shoots the demon possessing the priest as well as Casey, it is shown that the Colt is in fact effective. Both of the demons then have a seizure-like fit and emit light from their eyes and mouth, before falling lifeless to the ground, leaving a bloody human host behind. In the last minutes of the episode, Sam threatens to kill Ruby with the Colt, but Ruby sits around, unphased as she knows that Sam won't kill her. He then lowers the gun, allowing Ruby to live and continue to "help him". Her true motives or plans for the Winchesters are currently unknown, but time will ultimately tell all. Also in the last moments of an episode, Ruby claims to be the "Little Fallen Angel" on Sam's shoulder, this may hint something about who or what she is.

Finally, in "Malleus Maleficarum", we discover that Ruby used to be a witch who sold her soul to an unknown demon before her death during the plague. The demon, known as "Tammi", revealed that Ruby used to serve her, but since then has been let go. Her role became more vital in this episode as Ruby tries to warn Sam and Dean that something evil is looking for them, specifically a demon, and that it seeks death and vengeance. However, due to the Winchesters' stubborn nature, they stay behind and discover a coven of witches. In a final showdown between Tammi and Ruby; Tammi seems to have the upper hand, but is prevented from what looked like a demonic "soul extraction" from Ruby's human host when one of the witches in the coven does a spell to counteract her actions. Ruby, seconds from dying, is ultimately saved by Dean when he uses her dagger to stab Tammi multiple times in the back, killing her. At the end of the ordeal, Sam and Dean say that they will stay to help clean up the mess. But a slightly embarrassed and annoyed Ruby shrugs them off flashing demonic eyes to remind them she isn't a 'pathetic' human and she can take care of herself. Obviously sensing her fury, Sam and Dean go back to their motel for the night.

However, when they get to the motel, Dean steps outside and notices a crackling of electricity all around the motel and the surrounding area. He then turns around and faces a much more pacified Ruby, who seems to just want to talk. Ruby reveals that she was once truly a human, but years in hell have stripped her soul away and made her a demon. She then tells Dean that, yes, he will in turn become a demon when he goes to hell and that there is no way to stop it. Ruby also says that she only told Sam that she could help him save Dean's soul because it was the only way she could get Sam to trust her. Disturbed and left speechless, Dean asks her one last question about why she wants their side to win. Ruby then quietly responds that she still remember what it's like to be human and says that she isn't the same as the other demons, though she wishes she was. Before Dean can actually respond to Ruby, he becomes distracted and when he turns to talk to her, she has mysteriously vanished once again.

The next time Ruby makes an appearance is in "Jus in Bello". She appears halfway through the episode, breaking through a window which had a broken salt barrier. She then attracts the attention of everyone present in the police station, as she stands trapped. She informs Sam quite hastily that she had to kill a lot of demons outside in order to get into the station. After Sam breaks the circle which is trapping her, Ruby proceeds to inform everyone that about 30 demons are waiting outside, hungry for a good kill. She then asks the Winchester boys where the Colt is, but to their embarrassment, they tell her that it was stolen. Obviously angered, Ruby tries to think of another way that they could destroy all the demons outside. Before coming up with a solution, Ruby goes on to harshly reprimand the boys for losing the Colt, complaining about how all of her hard work to fix it has gone down the drain. If that wasn't enough, Ruby reveals to everyone in the station that Sam's "competition" is rapidly approaching their location. When pressed by Dean about who or what is coming, Ruby snaps back that a demon named Lilith has ascended to Earth with an agenda to get rid of the Winchester boys permanently. Ruby also says that without the Colt, they really don't stand a chance. Morbidly, she tells everyone in the station that the only thing that she can do is perform a spell which would vaporize every demon in a 1 mile radius. Ruby also then quietly and bitterly states that she would be vaporized as well. After a beat of silence, Ruby says that it's the only way and goes on to say that a human heart from someone with pure virture, is needed. Dean steps up to the plate claiming himself a man of virtue- Ruby rolls her eyes and clarifies; they need a virgin.

Suddenly, Ruby's eyes wander over to Nancy Fitzgerald, the innocent and pious secretary. Since demons can read minds, it is no wonder that Ruby identified Nancy as the only virgin in the station. Dean protests immediately that it's the wrong idea, but Ruby scans Sam's face and declares that he agrees with her. She states that Sam knows that it is the right thing to do. Dean then takes Sam aside and converses with him about the situation and what he truly feels. Sam then admits that it may be the only logical thing to do, but Dean goes on and changes the plan. He decides that they're going to let all the demons in and fight, hoping that they can defeat every one of the demons waiting outside. Upon hearing Dean's ridiculous plan, Ruby scoffs in disbelief and says that she was willing to give up her life for their cause. She then scolds them once again for their horrible decision-making skills, as well as their utter stupidity, and expresses sorrow and regret that she has been "betting on the wrong horse" with Sam. Angrily, Ruby proceeds to leave the station and pulls out her dagger when she gets outside. All the demons waiting there confront her, but she holds up her dagger and tells them that she's just leaving. Ruby is seen once again in the final moments of the episode as Sam and Dean sit inside of a motel. She turns on the TV silently and shows Sam and Dean what Lilith did. The Winchesters then look on with a sense of sadness and guilt at the TV as it is revealed that everyone inside, including Henriksen and Nancy, were killed in what appears to be an explosion. Ruby tells them that it was Lilith's doing, and that Lilith is furiously looking for them so that she can kill them as well. As they stare at her blankly, she gives each of them a pouch and says that the pouches will protect them and throw Lilith off of their path... temporarily. Ruby wants to be with Sam.

Powers and Abilities

As a demon she can possess human hosts, granting the body of the host demonic abilities, which can only be seen in a possessed person. Similar to other demons, she exhibits enhanced strength and inhuman durability. She can also exhibit the psychic powers of most demons, although these psychic powers are yet to be seen. During her time as a witch she has gained extraordinary knowledge of certain spells that can vanquish demons, as well as methods of protecting against demons and undoing harmful magic. Ruby is also a skilled fighter; however, being demonic, she is vulnerable to most weaknesses of demons. It is interesting to note that Ruby does not typically fight like a demon, using human style tactics (such as wielding her dagger), other than exhibiting telekinetic abilities.
Weaponry

Ruby is often shown to possess a mysterious and somewhat magical "demon-killing" dagger. It has been seen and utilized many times throughout the season, mainly as an instrument to kill demons. Upon being stabbed by the dagger, both the demon and human host suffer immediate death. The demon possessing the human is shown to convulse violently, as if shot with the Colt. It then flickers with light before expelling a small cloud of smoke from the human body, leaving whoever it was possessing dead. The demon possessing the body then also disperses, as the dagger's effects mirror that of the Colt. However, both its creation and how exactly it can kill demons has not yet been revealed.
